‘The Dead Dog’ - one of my collaborations with Poet Nicola Field for Why Won’t You Tell Me? The first of Steam Controls Castwords series. It’s also included as part of the sound design exhibit at the V&A’s Collaborators: UK Design for Performance. Dody Nash commissioned me to create something for her brilliant Listening Shell…also at the V&A you can hear that here…Lost at Sea…

Beautiful colours outside my window this morning.
So, it’s Halloween and north Manchester has been thrown into darkness, a power cut….or at least I hope (cue: very deep reverberant long laugh) thats what’s happened…(cue: Squeaky floorboard and the sound of a quiet irregular breath behind me)….
So all I have is about 30 minutes battery life on my laptop and a few samples to play with and………..

My friend Linda recommended this, do watch…some stuff we all know about but also a few surprises….
So it’s turning cold.
As I waited on the tram station platform this evening I began to ponder the lack of whistling in the world…whatever happened to people walking along the road whistling a favourite tune? I haven’t heard anyone doing this in ages….the world may be a pretty awful place at the moment, but maybe things might feel a little better if….I want to encourage the return of whistling, so if you’re a window cleaner, postman, milkman start whistling again today…I’m going to start practising. Mind you if Roger Whittaker ever reads this, then I hope he’ll ignore this plea….whistling that well is just plain annoying… Right….time for a cup of tea….

The first slightly chilly morning and it’s beginning to feel Autumnal, the sun is shining but a heavy dew lies on the surrounding roofs and grass. The leaves are turning and promising such wonderful colours, my favourite time of year approaches. The upgraded Metrolink track makes the passing trams almost silent, as they speed south towards Manchester.
So much depressing news on the TV once again today, but fresh mornings like today make me feel positive.
News stories this morning tell me that 2 graffiti artists get 12 and 15 months imprisonment whilst those found guilty of downloading child pornography get 10 months, eh? I enjoy good graffiti, the bad stuff annoys me…much like music and sound. OK, I accept that what those artists did was illegal but a slap on the wrists and some community service would have been punishment enough.,.if I read about our prisons being overcrowded again…surely it is the responsibility of authority to encourage and guide…

So, Saturday afternoon, I was just waiting to go and watch another Henry V preview and the UK’s first Art Car Parade passed the theatre. Some really amazing vehicles, many had been converted to become mechanical motorised instruments. Fantastic.

And todays parade is…..
‘The Freedom of the City Parade’ by the Royal Lancashire Regiment…or some such like bunch. something to do with losing so many members of that Regiment in that war that’s occurring at the moment, the one which shouldn’t really be happening type thang…Nevertheless Still A seriously tragic, sad, senseless and pointless loss of a young peoples lives.
Although, Uhmm, giving the freedom of a city like Manchester to a bunch of Squaddies? Did anyone really think this through?
Other military news today, as we’re on the subject…the Government have ordered two more Aircraft Carriers at a cost of something like 3.4 Billion pounds, meanwhile they’ve applied for European funding to help those stricken by the terrible floods in the Midlands, because we must be broke….how many hospitals, schools, homes, flood victims would that kind of money help….priorities in Westminster? If only we could all afford those toys we’d really like to buy and apply to Europe in order to pay the Household bills…

This is something I created for “Reaching for the Heavens” part of the Scenofest opening ceremony. It was played in the Tower of Babel whilst some wonderful creations were flown and paraded.
OK, so I wasn’t supposed to do this, someone pulled out at the last minute because of illness and I needed to come up with something very quickly. This was composed entirely in one take (no going back to remix, re-edit or readjust), I simply gathered some sounds from my collection and created textures using Reason. The whole thing was created in half an hour, whilst sat in a noisy production office with my laptop and headphones…I enjoyed the experience on this occasion, but I want to remix and change it but so far I’m resisting this temptation.

So, I spent a few weeks in Prague armed with my recorder. What did I capture? Not much really, I ended up far too busy to even think about recording. I did try and record a journey on one of the marvellous trams…ruined by a passenger with a hacking cough. I did record some rain and storms, but I have lots of this stuff and it didn’t turn out as well as my other similar recordings. But…
One evening just before Scenofest opened I managed to get back to my apartment for a quick nap before going out to eat. As I lay in bed, eyes shut, I heard a sound that could’ve placed me virtually anywhere in the world, the sound of some kids kicking a football against a wall. This is, in my opinion a truly global sound, not influenced in any way by location or time.

More sounds from my weeks in Prague soon….ish…..when I get time…So a maximun 5 hours sleep a night for the past three weeks, a lost voice (I found it again), a really bad cold and people insist on putting microphones in front of me and expecting lucid, intelligent, articulate, informative answers…..not a chance I’m afraid…..an occasional grunt is the best it’s going to get at the moment…..sorry…bed…sleep…..I need sleep….lots of it……hot…..eeeeeeekkkkkk

Missing you all

I’m wondering if anyone has a ’sound’ which they’d like to contribute to ‘The Babel Bell’ project at the forthcoming Scenofest at the Prague Quadrennial 2007.
The idea is that before each presentation, or event, on the Scenofest stage some loudspeakers mounted at the top of the Tower of Babel (a huge structure being built nearby) will relay a sound, which will herald people to the theatre. This sound can be anything whatsoever it’s simply down to you and your imagination. The only conditions are; that your sound should be no more than 1 minute long, that no payment will be due or made if they’re used and please do not infringe anyones’s copyright! These sounds must be all your own work…
Please send you your sounds to me, Steve@scenofest.org. I’ll look forward to receiving them, or answering any other questions you might have.
For further info on Scenofest and the Prague Quadrennial take a look at http://www.scenofest.org and http://www.pq.cz.
You don’t have to be a Sound Designer or Sound Artist, anyone can submit a sound….go on you know you want too..
And finally…..something for the weekend…

Those who know me, or have read/listened to some of my past posts, will know that I quite like a peaceful Sunday morning, not sure why, because to me this day of the week is much like any other. But I do like to simply lay in bed listening to people endlessly witter on the radio, or sometimes, I watch TV and laugh at the smug ‘oh aren’t we so ironic’ style of presentation on Channel Four. But when I’m in Manchester it isn’t the sound of Seagulls which wakes me, but the sound of this awful ‘electronic’ Church Bell. Yep not the romance real one but a digital ring much like the sound you’d expect from an overlarge wristwatch.
